Finding Trust Again: How One Relationship Changed Everything for Daniel's Family

For Nathan and Gaby, raising their son Daniel has always meant seeing the world a little differently.

Daniel is bright, creative, loving, and full of joy. He loves Legos, art, bow ties, and even occasionally dressing up in an inflatable bee costume just to make strangers smile.

“He wants to share joy with people,” Gaby said. “That’s who Daniel is.”

But alongside those gifts, Daniel faces significant challenges. He has autism, ADHD, severe asthma, and sensory needs that affect nearly every aspect of daily life. Like many families caring for a child with disabilities, Daniel’s parents have spent years navigating medical appointments, educational challenges, and the constant demands of caregiving.

“Every day is centered around making sure Daniel has what he needs,” Nathan said. “And when you’re doing that year after year, you feel every bit of support, or the lack of it.”

A Difficult Beginning

Before connecting with Quality Connections, Daniel’s family had experienced several disappointing support relationships.

One particularly difficult experience involved a school aide whose approach left lasting scars.

“There was a lot of force and control,” Gaby recalled. “We were seeing physical interventions and approaches that just weren’t working for Daniel.”

The experience made the family hesitant to trust anyone new.

“When we learned someone was coming to work with Daniel, I was excited, but I was also terrified,” Gaby said. “I kept wondering, ‘Are we going to end up with another person who doesn’t understand him?'”

That changed when they met Maria.

What stood out first wasn’t experience or credentials. It was honesty.

“Maria was upfront about what she knew and what she didn’t know,” Gaby said. “I could work with that. She was willing to learn.”

Over the last several years, Maria has become a consistent presence in Daniel’s life, helping him build skills, navigate challenges, and explore the world safely.

More importantly, she took the time to understand him.

“She’s learned Daniel’s triggers. She’s learned his needs,” Nathan said. “She’s learned how to help him before things become overwhelming.”

Daniel has a history of eloping — running unexpectedly from situations when overstimulated. He can become overwhelmed by noise, crowds, and unfamiliar environments. Activities that many families take for granted often require careful planning and support.

Through it all, Maria has remained patient, observant, and adaptable.

“There’s a language beyond words,” Gaby explained. “It’s understanding facial expressions, emotions, needs, and cues. Maria speaks that language.”

More Than Support

For Daniel’s family, Maria’s impact extends far beyond the hours she spends working with Daniel.

Gaby left a successful healthcare career to care for her family full-time after both Daniel and Nathan experienced significant health challenges.

Nathan, a retired Navy veteran, lives with combat-related PTSD and traumatic brain injuries. Gaby has faced serious autoimmune illnesses and multiple hospitalizations in recent years.

“There were times when I was incredibly sick,” Gaby said. “But whether I was sick or not, Daniel still needed care.”

Having reliable support through Quality Connections has allowed the family to attend medical appointments, run errands, and simply take an occasional breath.

“The services have changed our lives,” Nathan said. “Without them, our life would look completely different.”

Gaby agrees.

“The reason we’re able to create such a peaceful, stable environment for Daniel is because of the support we receive,” she said.

Surrounded by creativity, love, and support, Daniel enjoys time with his parents, Gaby and Nathan.

Looking Toward the Future

Like any parents, Nathan and Gaby dream about what comes next for their son.

They hope Daniel continues to develop his strengths, particularly his love for engineering, creativity, and building.

But more than anything, they hope he remains the kind-hearted child they’ve always known.

“I want him to be happy,” Gaby said. “But I also want him to be a good person.”

She paused for a moment before continuing.

“In a world that can feel dark sometimes, I want him to be a light. I want him to bring love and joy wherever he goes. That’s my hope for Daniel.”

Looking at the artwork covering the walls, the Legos filling the room, and the smiling boy proudly showing off his creations, it’s easy to see that he’s already doing exactly that.

And thanks to a trusted relationship, a supportive family, and a community that believes in him, Daniel has more opportunities than ever to keep shining.

For Daniel’s family, Quality Connections didn’t just provide services. It provided trust, partnership, and the support needed to help their son, and their entire family, thrive.

Maria's Perspective: Lessons From Daniel

When Maria first began working with Daniel, she assumed it would be a short-term assignment.

“Little did I know, it surely wasn’t,” she said with a smile. “I’ve been with Daniel for about three years now, and it has truly been life-changing.”

Like many direct support professionals, Maria wasn’t entirely sure what to expect when she first met Daniel. But it didn’t take long for him to begin teaching her.

“I quickly learned how important routines are, how fluffy and comfortable clothes need to be, and how a single stuffy can completely change a mood,” she said.

Over the years, Maria has learned far more than she expected.

“Thanks to Daniel, I can proudly say I know how to build LEGO sets, I’ve picked up countless interesting facts, and I continue to learn something new almost every day.”

She has also learned to recognize Daniel’s triggers and understand the challenges he faces when he becomes overwhelmed.

“There have been some scary moments when Daniel has eloped and run off,” Maria said. “But getting to know him and understanding his triggers has helped minimize those situations. He’s a sweet and sensitive soul who sometimes needs help regulating his emotions.”

For Maria, however, the relationship is about much more than providing support.

“Daniel has been a true light in my life,” she said. “He shares his faith with me, asks me to read Bible stories to him, and makes it a joy to come to work.”

One of her favorite moments happens almost every day.

“I love walking in and hearing, ‘Mariaaaa!’ and then getting to see a new creation or painting he’s made.”

After three years together, Maria says she is grateful not only for the opportunity to support Daniel, but also for everything he has brought into her life.

“The lessons, memories, and joy he’s brought me are something I will always cherish.”
